When to test

This test helps you find your status for the 4 common Sexually Transmitted Infections: Syphilis, Herpes II, HIV, and Hepatitis B

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
HIV is a virus that attacks cells necessary for normal immunity functions, resulting in the patient becoming more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. It is transmitted via contact with certain bodily fluids of an HIV infected person, typically through unprotected sex.

Herpes II

Genital herpes is an STI caused by the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which may be transmitted through sexual contact.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is part of a group of hepatitis viruses that attack the liver. It is considered and STI because it can be passed on via unprotected sex through infected semen and vaginal fluids. There is a vaccine to prevent hepatitis B, which is routinely offered to infants.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial STI caused by Treponema Pallidum and is most commonly transmitted via contact with an infected individual during sexual activity. With early detection and treatment, the disease can be cured during its early stages where symptoms are not yet severe.

STD testing at a glance

Sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are typically passed from person to person through sexual contact. There are approximately 14,000 people living with STIs in Singapore each year.

What are STIs?

I don't have symptoms, should I get tested?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that are passed between partners during sexual activity. You can contract an STI through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has an STI.

Yes, many STDs produce no signs or symptoms (are asymptomatic). Even if you're not experiencing symptoms, you still can pass the infection to your sex partners. Hence, it's important to use protection, such as a condom, during sex and get tested regularly to know your status.

What happens if an STI is left untreated?

How frequently should I get tested?

While many STIs may remain asymptomatic, if left undetected and untreated, they can have serious long-term, and even life-threatening consequences. The sooner you're diagnosed, the sooner you can start treatment. Testing is also important for the safety of you and your partners.

It is recommended that active adults get tested at least once a year, even when practicing safe sex regularly. If you are sexually active with multiple partners, have unprotected sex, or suspect a partner may have an STD due to visible symptoms, you might want to consider getting tested more regularly.
